For many years, researchers have studied how school choice programs impact student outcomes.  Now economists are reporting that school choice can change neighborhoods too. To date, neighborhood improvements have been an unintended benefit. School choice programs were not generally designed to improve neighborhoods. It just happened. Now we understand the key features that can make school choice a valuable economic development tool, and how school choice can be used to tackle the country’s biggest environmental problem.
